Ozyorsk, Chelyabinsk OblastOzyorsk or Ozersk (Russian: Озёрск) is a city, formerly known as Chelyabinsk-40 then Chelyabinsk-65, in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. Its 2002 population was 90,000.
Ozyorsk was and remains a closed city because of its proximity to the Mayak plant, the main source of Soviet plutonium during the Cold War, and now a Russian facility for processing nuclear waste and recycling nuclear material from decommissioned nuclear weapons. Mayak was the site of a major 1957 disaster involving radioactive pollution; see list of military nuclear accidents. Ozersk and the surrounding countryside have suffered from serious radioactive pollution, and the Mayak plant remains controversial in this regard.
